Delta summer in November

I’m sure glad Al Gore invented global warming because Sunday November 4th, 2012 was a great day to be on the water in the mighty California Delta. High 70’s and bluebird skies. Mike, Randy and I launched from Russos at 10:00 AM. Playing tides like poker we decided to probe Mildreds holes first but she was not gravid. Spent some time in Mandy for the same cold shoulder treatment. We mixed it up with Pointers, traps, spooks, Big hammers, poppers, DWB plugs, kitchen sink.  Around noon we picked up and ran to points west. Showed my crew how to get stuck on the sand bar at Eddos. Big Break nada.Sherman a little brown and quiet with little to no current.

No bait, no birds no busters in Big Break

Broad nada except for a no shit for real shanty singing arrrrggg matey pirate ship.

yo ho ho it’s a pirates life for me

We slipped a little further west and started getting hit on blue/chrome rattle trap

Dangerious Trebles $10 fish

I knocked an estimated 12# fish off Mikes rod at boat side with bogus boga deployment.

Bite was steady here and we picked up a handful.

Super spook schoolie

Just west of broad slough

When the sun hit the ridge we blew back to Franks at 60 MPH (yes that’s fun) in  fading light.

Finally some current movement!

The last hour was slurps, boils and busting bait all on top.

plenty of these

No big fish landed but a couple of very impressive blowups.

Final stop at Circle your Wagons which was all quiet. May have to take a day off this week!

Curves and wheels

From my early days  playing with Hot Wheels, building Revell model cars and HO scale slot car racing sets I have been chronically obsessed with cars and most notably sports cars.  Here are a few visuals to help you understand my specific obsession.

Pyramid Octo Ocho Mas

Mike, Brian and I left Pleasanton Friday afternoon for Sin City north. We stayed at Grand Sierra in Reno which appears to have undergone a facelift and was pretty nice. We went downtown and had bowl noodle hot at Pho 77. Cheap and very tasty. Checked out the CalNeva Karaoke scene to see what the wierdo quotient was. Bounced around gambling until midnight and crashed. Up at 5:30 and on the lake at 6:30 at Blockhouse. Fish started biting as soon as the sun hit the water. White spoon with green spots was hot for me lading 8 fish for the day with a few lost.  Saw conservatively 40 fish caught throughout the day. Weather was very nice. Back to the hotel in time so watch the game. Improbable Giants! Gave it a go Sunday at Sand Hole and Blockhouse for very few fish.Slow, despite golden conditions.

Delta Kickoff

Fall in the delta! Baseball playoffs on the radio, burning $100 of gas running all over hell at 60MPH, diving birds, stripers having their way with the bait and our gear, Debra’s sandwiches,  the evening bite, beers…really great to get out for the first trip of the fall. Brother Randy and D Trebles Esq. on board for a 10:00 am tractor launch at Russos. 10+ MPH winds but we push west on a mission. Pounded Sherman, SJ, Sac, Big Break, big and Little Franks. Didn’t catch shit however of target species. A few rag green carp and one decent one. One piddly ass striper WAY at the end of spoonbill midday. Knew fish would be there on my rockwall but too windy.  Ended the day making one big loop around Franks on a wing and a prayer but all quiet. We threw rattle traps, spooks, punkers, big hammers and the big Persuader popper. Will be POUNDING the circuit for the next 2 months hoping for a better year than 2011.

Green Carp on chartreuse super spook at Circle Your Wagons

Tahoe blau

Spent Friday and Saturday nights in Tahoe with the missus. Saturday we drove around the lake with frequent stops along the way. Sunday morning we took 89 south and headed up and over Monitor Pass. Seems we were about two weeks too early for the Aspens to turn but the drive was spectacular nonetheless. Down 395 to 108 and up and over Sonora Pass. Debra’s car LOVES that route LOL.

Eagle Lake-The Root is on Fire

Left Pleasanton at noon on Friday for the LOOOOOONG drive to Eagle Lake.

Hit up Granzellas for lunch in Willows, HIGHLY recommended. Finally off the hwy at Red Bluff and headed up towards Almanor.

Ponderosa fire was burning close to the highway. As we were in traffic I saw a familiar sticker on a trailer two cars in front.

Dangerous Trebles and his better half en rendevouz. Helos continued darting back and forth

Retardant convoy

Once they let us through we continued up the road in thick smoke to Diamond Mtn casino in Susanville.

Banged on the slots for a few hrs and went to bed. Up and out at 9:00 AM Sat morning for the 15 mile ride to Eagle. Still plenty of smoke.

Checked into Merrill campground

Launched the yaks around 11:00 AM as the morning shift was leaving.

Got pinned to the bank very quickly as the winds came up. No fish were killed in the making of this report (unfortunately).

Made the best of it with a relaxing day back at camp. Company, Food and grub excellent as usual.

Looking forward to going back to Eagle but will make sure I have a few days to stay next time. Several I talked to said fishing was red hot on nightcrawlers and slip bobbers at 25 feet.
