Delta Deluge

Had my brother in law Ric out from Chicago and wanted to put him on the spring striper bite. We launched from Sugar barge at 7:30 to slightly jackass conditions, excellent cloud show and no rain. I figured and had friends confirm prior that finding clean water north, west or east  would be tough so we started in North Franks. A very angry largemouth in 3 feet of water  went for a early DWB in Bone.

Had some swirls on top but I decided to roll the dice and motor up the South Mokulmne. Chocolate city and hour wasted. Off to Mildreds. We started getting some action in the stumps. I got treed by a 20 lb class fish who swam off with my aforementioned plug. Enormous tail on that fish. It was wrapped 5 feet away from the boat in plain sight. I thought about letting it swim out of the tree but horsed it instead. We fished all  over Mildreds and Mandeville. It was a 4 bridge day. We finished up in Franks in the rain. Quiet on top so we busted out bass gear and caught a few in the tulies.

Great day on the water.

Mike and I rolled up over the pass on our way to 3 days of fishing Pyramid.

IMG_3417We picked up Chilly B at the Reno airport  and headed straight for the lake. IMG_3419 IMG_3421We fished Blockhouse for the morning and then moved up to Pelican. Mikey gets first blood

Delta 02-FEB-2016-Global Warming has it’s advantage

I fished south and east Feb 7 for a big fat zilch. Bass guys were doing ok.  No pics, runs hits or errors.

I was able to squeeze in much needed water time on the Delta on Feb 15 after a week working a trade show in Anaheim.

Dangerous Dirigibles and I rolled over the Bethel Island bridge at sunrise.IMG_3382

Sugar Barge launch to clear skies and 60 degrees.

IMG_3383

We headed northeast working likely spots on the San Joaquin. Incoming tide.  All quiet in the usual spots. Further east we found birds, bait and a few lunging stripers working east of the Hwy 12 bridge. We commenced to pull on a few  schoolies  on swimbaits dragged right on the bottom. Spoon worked as well.

IMG_3385

We did a lot of scouting down as far as Mildreds. Tons of bass boats up tight to the tulies but we wanted stripers.

I stopped on some of the holes draining out of Mandeville and worked a largemouth bite

IMG_3387 IMG_3388

Water temps ranged from 54-58 and clarity was still poor in most places. I will let the full moon pass before checking the delta again.

New Slowlones

Dangling Participles and I decided to abandon the delta in favor of taking my skunk to Melones. We arrived at 8:30 AM  to cloud cover, no wind, and 50 degree temps. Waxing crescent moon, low moving in, what’s not to like. It was a bit of shock too see the lake level despite the constant barrage of doomsday drought reporting.

The launch was at the very end of Glory hole  off the gravel. Not too bad with some 20 or so boats launching that day. We ran first to Carson and found a ton of feeding birds.

We trolled out of there and headed for the 49er bridge.

The pic above tells lies

Pull back a bit and there is still a llot water in this lake.

We tried Coyote and found a lot of bait but not much to show for it. We continued up river towards Parrots Ferry. No fish busting on top at all but the meter was lit up at 60 feet.

IMG_2900a IMG_2901a

Upon reaching Parrots Ferry we were turned away by mud, debris and boulders in the water. Lowest I have seen in in 35 years.

Lots of mining ruins to explore.

We worked Mormon and all the way south. The Dam was bouyed off.

We ended up in Angles Creek arm which looked very fishy. One of our few fish for the day fell for a silver blue Kastmaster.

Schlongfest 2015

Jerry and I launched from Lautizens at 6:00 AM just in front of Long. Fog on the deck made for an interesting drive by wire into Sherman.

P1090499Jerry stuck a 27 inch 8 lb fish at first light in south central sherman.

P1090502 P1090503 P1090504He pulled this fish out of the tules in 4 feet of water on a blue/chrome rattle trap after a great fight. Jerry broke his brand new rod reel combo in properly. We worked numerous spots in Sherman and then moved through the maze into Broad slough. Conditions were perfect with a dropping tide and fog on the deck.

IMG_2720 IMG_2721 IMG_2722 IMG_2723

In deference to the other participants in the derby I was fishing without hooks. I was sure my partner was going to pick up a second fish to put us in the running. Texts were coming in from the other boats every couple minutes but I did not want to look.

We tried the San Joaquin down to Eddos and all over inside Big Break. Very slow day considering the conditions. We finished the day trolling back to the ramp and were on the trailer at 1:30.

We found our campsite at Sugar Barge which was setup perfect for the after party.

Bernard and Greg brought their fish to the party.

Randy and I launched from Lauritzens a bit before dawn. Sliver moon, no wind, building clouds to the south. We messed around at the bridge for a couple of passes with Duh spooons.

P1090485 P1090486 P1090489 P1090491We had plenty of action but not much size. hardware consisted of spooks,  spoons, Lucky Craft Pointers, swimbaits, rattle traps, and  DWB big wood. We ran the maze and turned north following the bank in Broad Slough.  I hit a for sure DD fish that ran directly to the boat then took off in the opposite direction. He ripped off 25 yards of line and popped me off in the weeds.  Randy got swirled on by a PIG 10 feet from the boat but she would not commit. Looked like a porpoise. There were beasts there in 6 feet of water willing to go on top.

Pyramid Cloudshow

Henny and Mike met Debra and I at the Grand Sierra in Reno Friday night for a Halloween getaway. Dinner at Palmers Steakhouse was a hit nicely accopanied  with a bottle of Syrah. After some Gamboling I slipped off to the room for a relatively early night. Mike and I  headed out at 5:30 AM Saturday for the home of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Pyramid lake. Rumors of big winds early had me worried as I had never boated here before. We started trolling near Pelican at first light. Bleeding Frog u20 kwikfish between 40-60 feet. Plenty of marks but slow.

IMG_2563 IMG_2570There was some breeze but we decided to run to the Pyramid for a look. 2/3rds of the way the lake became quite sporty but we pressed on.

IMG_2575 IMG_2578 IMG_2581It was my first trip to the east side and it is certainly  geologically awe inspiring. We beat back to the west side near Warrior and started getting some action.

IMG_2584We trolled many hours for a couple fish and a few lost opportunities as the cloud show unfolded.

IMG_2645Late afternoon the sky went psychedelic for a couple of hours. Amazing color show.

IMG_2697The Black Helicopter started circling and later we found out someone had a very bad day on the lake.

IMG_2691

We put the boat back on the trailer at around 5 and made the drive back to Reno.

IMG_2702Once back in Reno we met the ladies fresh from Spa Day and went downtown for the Halloween Freak Show and were not disappointed. No pics of the revelers.

It was raining HARD coming over Donner Pass Sunday morning. Hope this is a recurring theme.
