Pyramid Water Babies
My navigator and I rolled over Donner Pass Friday afternoon to clear conditions. Reno bound. It was awesome to see 10 ft snowdrifts. We messed around a bit in the casinos Friday night to no avail. Saturday morning we drove the 45 minutes to Pyramid.
I hoped I might fish but wind was fresh and fierce.
We continued north but the road was closed at Warrior Pt.
The Water Babies were howling and trying to escape their watery confines.
Warrior is where the winds from the south 15 mile fetch meets the north 15 mile fetch and all hell breaks loose. I sat there for an hour watching the currents and clouds collide.
Debra had never seen the east side so we rounded down to Nixon NV. The Truckee river dumps in there and it is the gateway to Gerlach.
Faster Farms time machine
We drove another 10 miles north towards Black Rock.

On the way back we took the SE route to Fernley to scope the river. I am so used to the Truckee near Tahoe all pine trees and green. The desert course is very stark.
Sunday morning we sat in Verdi Nv waiting for Donner Pass to open.
We sat there for 3 hrs and decided to check back into a hotel. We watched the Warrior game in the casino and enjoyed the pained look on Spikes face as the Knicks went down. Back in the room around 3:30 PM and I check and see if the pass is still closed. OPEN! I kissed off the hotel room and we beat it over the mountain in whiteout conditions. Only took 7 hrs to get home.
Coastal Bombing run
Dirty Melones
Solo run Saturday back to New Melones.
It was very cool to see the cove at Angels filling up.
I tried hitching a ride to the parking lot with the local Lyft operator…
Water stained from one end of the lake to the other and as a consequence catching was limited. Scenery was as usual top notch. I made it way up river to the Stanislaus fork running and gunning waterfalls and bridges.
Hope they let her fill!
Melones Rising
Mike and I left Pleasanton at 6 AM off to Melones to see what the recent storms had wrought.
We launched at Tuttletown in between the logs strewn all over the ramp. Water was stained but not mud. We hit most all creek arms but conditions were slow. Ran across Rod (Reel Habit) who had a couple of notches in the pistol.
A handful of trout and bass for the day.
I think I will wait a week or two before going back.
Six Bit Gulch
I did a solo run to Don Pedro because word was Melones was still mud. The lake is almost full and stunning. Water coming in everywhere. Lot’s of bass guys out. No wind and a crisp 40 degrees as I launched.
For those of you going soon launch at Blue Oaks. Much shorter walk to the parking lot. I was headed towards Gardiner Falls stopping at creeks along the way. Casting not trolling.
Had a nice size follower at Gardiner.
I met Patrick (Twofish) there but he was reporting slow conditions. Next stop Six Bit Gulch.
WIKI:
Placer gold occurs in stream channel deposits within the natural area, primarily Six Bit Gulch and Poor Man’s Gulch, mostly washed in from the north..
The placer gold produced from this district was recovered by ground sluicing and hydraulic mining in earlier years, and by dragline dredging in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1850s, during the great California Gold Rush, Chinese laborers, with their legendary patience and thoroughness, mined much of the placer gold within Six Bit Gulch, a major drainage channel that courses through the natural area. The dredging of Six Bit Gulch and Poor Man’s Gulch produced over $100,000 worth of gold.[2]
Fishing was very good back there. I was toplining a Brown trout colored Thomas Bouyant and a Cop Car Needlefish and had steady action.
Lot’s of jump in these fish contrary to the Melones strain.
I got bored and wanted to see how close the water was to the bridge. WOW.
I kept hitting any creek i saw
But the only action I had was Six Bit
Thanks go to the Rain Gods.
