Smoked Crab

I chickened out on the crab opener last weekend due to a Small Craft Advisory. I am too old to get beatup out there anymore so I pick my days. Had 6 crew on time at the dock at a leisurely 8 AM.

We dropped 3 squares off of Stinson Beach in 90 ft and 3 more off of duxbouy in 110 feet. Off to the reef off of Bolinas for a slow pick of rockfish. Lots of donated gear and approx 10 rockfish later we decided to pull and headed to the outer pots. BLANK 3 pots in a row. WTH? Smoke-shrouded pot raiders? We stacked those and headed to the squares for 8 keeper and a dozen or more shorts. We fished Centissima reef for an hour for a couple more rockies. We caught Browns, Cabezone, Blacks, Kelp Greenling, starfish, rockcrab and baby lings. Nothing of bragging size.

Pickerell Brothers at work

No wind or swell to speak of. ACRES of anchovies getting bombed by pelicans and gulls out between Dux and Bolinas. Most rockfish helpfully barfed up partially digested anchovies that we industriously reused.

Not sure what we are doing wrong on the crab pots but grateful for the 3 I ate!

I gave them a relaxing hot tub for 10 minutes with Zatarains and Debra did the critters up right oven roasted with lemon, butter, garlic and white wine.

I hope to get out again over the Thanksgiving holidays.

North Coast

We camped at Caspar Beach near Mendo this weekend. The fall colors in the vineyards of the Anderson Valley were pretty amazing. It was foggy the whole stay but not too cold. Caspar RV  park was functional with a great location steps from the beach. The locals at the Rite Aid in Ft  Bragg gave me some local intel about some newly open shore fishing  spots behind the old mill. They advised not to waste time at the Noyo Harbor jetty. They were right. It was a kick reeling in 2 LB striped surfperch 50 ft up the cliff. Bobber with 5 ft of leader, octopus hook and shrimp worked. No hangups in the kelp  with the bobber. Had a whale show right off the cliff I was fishing off of. Dinner Saturday night at  Cafe Beaujolais was outstanding. They also do Pizzas from 11 AM to 3 PM in the garden behind the restaurant. This made the navigator happy.

We stopped at River Rock Casino on the way back but they stole my  money.

Meanwhile, out West

Turhan and I had a very good day on the Dirty D.  We had plans to fish from Honker to Mildreds if necessary. We pumped $100 worth of gas into the sled and  launched from Lauritzens noonish,  headed west. Over the course of the next 6 hrs we put 40 fish easy on the boat. All on  swimbaits and spoons. No big ones but these guys were very  agresssive, hitting multiple times marauding all the way to the boat. Birds helped us today but several good spots had no obvious signs. We never went east.

Back to the track Jack: Rennsport 2018

Debra and I  attended Rennsport at Laguna Seca last weekend. At my age this is the only porn I am interested in. I shot close to 400 pics and spent all week culling and editing for your viewing pleasure. Behold!

Big Sur-Gorda-Laguna Seca Coastal Getaway

Debra and I spent a very nice fall weekend on the coast. No camping this time! Saturday we ran down the coast from Monterey to Lucia at the southern end of Big Sur.  GLORIOUS drive in Debra’s rocketship. Occasionally the sea of RV’s and tourists would part enabling  me to stretch the cars legs a bit. Serious fun. We stopped at all my favorite Hwy 1 photo spots so it was a long day.

Sunday we hit the race track for the IMSA Sports Car Challenge. The day consisted of several different sprints with a 2.5 hr afternoon finale. Great chance to see LMP1 cars ass to nose with GT cars. Gold chain and chest hair Lambo Troffeo Challenge, Rich Dentists Porsche Cup heats rounded out the events. We walked several miles to all corners of the track throughout the day so got some much needed exercise as well.
